Aubree, 3 years old, Hand Tricycle
Aubree, was diagmosed with a Stage 3 Neuroblastoma, which is a rare form of cancer of the nerve tissue. Her tumor was wrapped around her spinal cord and even after surgery to safely remove what physicians could; she suffered paralysis in her lower extremities. In 2013 Aubree relapsed and is currently in treatment. SMILE provided Aubree with a bubble gum colored hand cycle and a princess helmet that would provide her the exercise, mobility, and happiness every 3 year old should have.
Emma, 22 months old, Hearing-Aids
Emma was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma (at the age of 10 months) a brain tumor located in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance and other complex motor functions. Emma underwent Chemotherapy, stem cell rescue and surgery to treat her cancer. As a result of her chemotherapy, Emma lost hearing in both of her ears. Emma’s parents insurance does not cover hearing aids. SMILE was able to provide the hearing aids and the necessary molds, enabling Emma to hear the voices of loved ones and the many
Carson, 4 years old, Therapeutic Tricycle
Carson was diagnosed with severe congenital hydrocephalus, scoliosis, and cerebral palsy. Carson attends weekly speech, occupational, and physical therapy session to help him succeed in everyday life. The many physical challenges Carson faces limits his mobility drastically.
SMILE provided him with a lime green Rifton Tricycle to help improve his respiration health, circulatory health, and leg strength. His social workers and physicians believe that riding the trike will enable him to increase his self-esteem, peer interaction, and social acceptance.
